As Warwickshire basks in the heatwave which has swept the country, leading eye-care experts are warning people to make sure they are properly protected while out in the sun.

Space Healthcare, based in Clarendon Avenue, Leamington Spa, is urging people to take suitable precautions against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays by wearing good quality sunglasses when out enjoying the sunny weather.

Lesley Mason, optometrist at Space, said people often don’t realise the risk to their long-term eyesight from exposure to the sunshine, with UV rays contributing to cataracts and macular degeneration.

She said: “Most people are aware of the risks of excessive UV exposure to skin health but UV light can be equally damaging to your eyes. Probably the simplest solution is to wear sunglasses. However, it’s important to make sure the sunglasses you choose give the best protection. You should look for lenses which are CE marked and offer 100 per cent UV protection – the colour and depth of tint has no bearing on the level of UV protection.

“Wearing cheaper, darker lenses with no UV protection is actually more dangerous than wearing no sunglasses at all, because of the eyes’ natural defences of pupil constriction and ‘squinting’ in bright light conditions.”

Space Healthcare offers a wide range of ophthalmological procedures including laser eye  surgery and cataracts treatments. For more information, call 01926 282 282 or visit
